Essential Oil Bug Prevention

Its Spring in South Carolina and that means bugs! We just moved into a new house which I love but often times it takes awhile to get the bugs under control. We have a wonderful screened in deck but even that doesn’t prevent 100% of the bugs from getting in. We just recently added a screen underneath the wood to keep bugs from flying through the cracks. That has helped a lot but we still get little spiders and small flying bugs. My husband sprayed the outside perimeter of the house with a bug preventative but I don’t want those chemicals anywhere NEAR where my kiddos play. So I started to look through my essential oils. I created this little mix and I think it has worked pretty well! I will have to wait to see how often I have to apply it, but it did seem to get rid of the bugs when I sprayed it.

I got an amber spray bottle like this and I added:

1/2 cup of Dr. Bronners (unscented) but you could use peppermint or tea tree for an even stronger effect.

20 drops of the following oils: cedarwood, peppermint, and tea tree

10 drops of clove

I filled the remainder with water.

I sprayed this all along the perimeter of the deck, and I even sprayed the screen a bit to prevent the bugs from landing on it.

Only time will tell how effective this is but I am hopeful. Try it yourself and let me know how it works for you!
